City invites public input on proposed upgrades to south dike section
Richmond is taking steps to protect its community from potential flood hazards. Positioned at an average elevation of just one meter above sea level, the city faces threats from rising seas, coastal storm surges, snowmelt flooding, and severe weather. To mitigate these risks, Richmond is moving forward with its Dike Master Plan, focusing on enhancing the south dike section stretching from 6080 Dyke Road to the Gilbert Road South Pump Station.
In December 2023, Richmond held an open house aimed at collecting feedback from residents of the London Landing neighborhood on initial south dike design plans. After considering the feedback, the city has refined the designs and is now requesting further input from local residents and businesses.
Public participation can be done in two ways:
1. In person: Attend an open house on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the London Landing Wharf, located at 6200 Dyke Road. City staff will be present to discuss the south dike improvements and answer inquiries, while children can enjoy activities in the Kids’ Corner.
2. Online: Access LetsTalkRichmond.ca to review project details and complete a brief survey by October 6, 2024.
The south dike enhancements involve the elevation of approximately 850 meters:
– 180 meters will be raised by an average of 0.8 meters to the west.
– 670 meters will be raised by an average of 1.5 meters to the east.
– Plans also accommodate future raises to an elevation of 5.5 meters.
