City Council halts 90-unit project over location concerns
Richmond City Council has informed the Provincial Government that it has canceled a proposed 90-unit supportive housing project scheduled for the City-owned Cambie Road and Sexsmith Road site. The decision to terminate the government-funded initiative came after the Minister of Housing announced plans to revive the project following a halt imposed before the last provincial election to consider alternatives. ‘The community has voiced concerns about the location, made worse by the government’s decision to resume the project without consulting residents,’ Mayor Malcolm Brodie stated, flanked by Council members. ‘While supportive projects are essential, they must align with community needs, which was not the case here,’ Brodie continued, criticizing the lack of transparency about five other potential sites evaluated before returning to Cambie/Sexsmith. The initial plan, overseen by BC Housing, aimed to create permanent housing for residents currently living in two temporary facilities, Alderbridge and Aster Place, with leases ending in 2027.
