Increased Participation, Facility Improvements, and Community Engagement

The 2022-2024 Recreation and Sport Strategy update highlights significant increases in program participation following the pandemic’s easing, demonstrating the community’s strong desire for accessible and high-quality recreational opportunities. Total drop-in visits and program registrations showed substantial growth.

The City made considerable investments in park infrastructure, completing over 30 park construction projects and new facilities such as the Steveston Community Centre and Library, Bowling Green Community Activity Centre, and the West Richmond Pavilion. These improvements expand access to recreational spaces and activities.

Numerous initiatives focused on increasing community engagement and addressing barriers to participation. These include the Recreation Fee Subsidy Program, the Active Recreation & Sport Fund, and various outreach programs targeting diverse demographics (youth, seniors, women). The Activity Search Tool improved online program accessibility.

Partnerships with community organizations, schools, and non-profits played a crucial role in program delivery and community outreach. Grants supported various initiatives, fostering collaborations and volunteerism, as demonstrated by the increase in volunteer hours and the successful delivery of various community events.
