Approval of Townhouse & Commercial Renovations; Discussion on Banning Harmful Dog Collars
The Development Permit Panel approved two development permits: one for the construction of 34 townhouse units at 4400, 4420, and 4440 Smith Crescent, with a parking variance; and another for exterior renovations and landscaping improvements at 3100 St. Edwards Drive. A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to a proposal to ban the sale and use of prong, pinch, electric shock, and choke collars for dogs. The proposal, supported by numerous veterinarians and a Member of Parliament, cited concerns about animal welfare and the effectiveness of humane, reward-based training methods. The panel expressed support for the project and encouraged collaboration with neighbours during construction. Concerns regarding potential flooding near the townhouse development were addressed with the applicant agreeing to implement drainage and stormwater management measures.
