The playground reflects Steveston’s maritime heritage with inclusive, engaging features.
A beloved community space is set to reopen following an extensive renovation. The Steveston Community Park playground, situated at the corner of No. 1 Road and Moncton Street, will officially welcome visitors again on Tuesday, June 24, at 9:30 a.m. after upgrades began in September 2024.
Community members are encouraged to join the festivities, which will include a ribbon-cutting with Mayor Brodie, members of the Council, and the Steveston Community Society. The event will feature family-friendly attractions such as face painting and a bubble artist.
The playground has been redesigned to accommodate children of all abilities, incorporating elements that celebrate Steveston Village’s maritime history. Built on the original site, the upgraded space offers an accessible, inclusive environment for children and families to enjoy.
New features include salmon and fishing boat-themed climbers with interactive panels, a lighthouse tower with dual slides, a sand play area with a water table and digger, a train play structure, a double zip line, and classic equipment such as swings and spinners.
Accessibility remains a priority, with rubberized surfacing connecting areas, accessible entries and play elements, a wheelchair-accessible spinner, ground-level play panels, and a full support swing.
The rubber surfacing, made from recycled materials from British Columbia, received partial funding through the Tire Stewardship BC Community Grant Program.
The Steveston Community Society contributed financially to the playground’s renewal and collaborated on its design and development.
