RICHMOND, B.C. — After a month of sweat, steps, and sports from coast to coast, Richmond, B.C. has clinched the title of Canada’s Most Active Community in the 2025 ParticipACTION Community Challenge, presented by Novo Nordisk.
The annual nation-wide initiative saw participation from 672 communities across all provinces and territories, with Richmond emerging as the frontrunner by mobilizing residents of all ages and abilities in over 1,000 different programs and events held throughout June.
For its efforts, the city has been awarded the grand prize of $100,000 to invest in future local physical activity and sport initiatives.
Richmond Walks (and Plays) Its Way to the Top
Notable programs that brought the community together included the Get Active BINGO Challenge, women’s-only multisport sessions, sensory-friendly swim hours, and Nordic pole-walking outings, as well as Richmond United FC’s Seniors Walking Soccer (pictured above). The program, sponsored by Sandhar Trucking, encourages older adults to stay active through a modified, low-impact version of the beautiful game. This initiative exemplified the inclusive spirit of the Challenge and helped Richmond rack up activity minutes across its population base.
A National Effort
This year’s Challenge saw record-breaking engagement. Over 10,000 physical activity-related events were hosted by more than 1,500 organizations, drawing over 846,000 participants — a significant jump from last year’s tally by 220,000.
Each province and territory also crowned its own most active community, with regional winners receiving between $7,500 and $15,000 to continue their work in promoting physical wellness.
The Community Challenge, backed by the Government of Canada and Novo Nordisk, aims to create more equitable access to physical activity and sport across the country. Organizers praised the grassroots commitment shown by communities like Richmond in driving participation and fostering healthier lifestyles.
