Candidates and residents advised on compliance ahead of 2024 Provincial Election

With the 2024 Provincial Election campaign officially underway, the City of Richmond is reminding candidates, their supporters, and residents of regulations concerning the placement of election-related signs. According to Bylaw 8713 (Election and Political Signs), individuals are prohibited from placing political signs, or allowing them to be placed, on any City highway or right of way; a boulevard, center median, or sidewalk, or in a park; any roadway structure or traffic control device; a tree, planter, waste receptacle, newspaper or mailbox located on City-owned land; or any other City-owned property including land, buildings, structures, and equipment. Signs no larger than 0.6 square meters may be placed on a boulevard directly in front of a residential property with the consent of the property owner, or strata corporation if the property contains strata lots. Signs must not be within one meter of a fire hydrant or placed in locations that could pose hazards to pedestrians, cyclists, or vehicles, or impact traffic control devices. City staff will remove non-compliant signs and place them at the City Works Yard (5555 Lynas Lane) for collection within seven days. Violation of the Bylaw could result in fines up to $100, and signs must be removed no later than October 26, seven days after the October 19 election. Bylaw 8713 can be accessed online.
