Richmond is set to take a major step forward in community recreation with the approval of a brand-new fieldhouse at Hugh Boyd Community Park. Designed to replace the aging 975-square-foot structure built in 1969, the new facility—dubbed the West Richmond Pavilion—will offer athletes, families, and visitors a modern and much-needed upgrade.

The West Richmond Pavilion will span two storeys and approximately 10,830 square feet. It will feature multipurpose rooms, modern change rooms, public washrooms, a referee room, a limited-service kitchen, and a full concession area. A standout addition will be a 1,000-square-foot covered outdoor viewing deck, offering spectators a comfortable place to enjoy matches and events rain or shine.

With a budget of $19.85 million allocated for the project, construction is expected to begin in late 2025, with completion targeted for 2027. The new pavilion will not only support the vibrant day-to-day activities of local sports groups and community programs but will also help Richmond attract larger tournaments and regional competitions.

Public engagement is an important part of the process. The city recently held an open house at the West Richmond Community Centre, giving residents the opportunity to view project plans, interact with city staff, and share feedback about the facility’s future impact. Activities were also provided to encourage families and young athletes to take part.

The West Richmond Pavilion is part of a broader city initiative aimed at enhancing Richmond’s recreational infrastructure to meet the needs of a growing and active community. Once complete, it promises to be a landmark facility that future generations of athletes and families will call home.
